DC News Tech Talk
The segment explores the efforts of Volunteers of America and the Institute for Public Health Innovation to develop a new affordable senior housing community in D.C.’s Ward 6. VOA and IPHI engaged residents directly, asking seniors what they most want in their homes and showcasing technologies designed to meet those needs. Demonstrations included fall-detection wearables, virtual exercise classes, and animatronic pets to combat loneliness—tools chosen for their ease of use and ability to integrate seamlessly into daily life.
Among the innovations, PingCares was featured as a simple, senior-friendly smartwatch designed to keep older adults connected and supported through easy-to-use features like large buttons for emergency calling, underscoring VOA’s commitment to solutions that enhance both safety and independence.
The initiative reflects a resident-driven design process, ensuring seniors’ voices guide what “best-in-class” housing looks like. By pairing affordable housing with smart health tools and community input, the project aims to improve quality of life for older adults while addressing both technological and social needs.
